SXSW 2011: Day One

Just to further whet your appetite for the photo story here is the real thing - day one. after this only repliers get Days two to four.....

Its 12.30 in the afternoon, there must be a band playing somewhere. Yes there is and its one of my MUST SEE bands , Clock Opera... Not bad , but the competition is way high...

Pop in to one of my favourite venues - Red Eyed Fly - to see We Barbarians.

Then the pace steps up, one of everyone's must see bands, a big buzz band - Twin Shadow, destined for mass pop super stardom.

Great Hair.

Into the venue with one of the worst sounds of the week - to see Jeff The Brotherhood - a tent in the Beauty Bar Backyard.

Then one of the best afternoon parties always is the Canadian Blast party. Kicked off with Imaginary Cities. (MS 6 now - where MS = one of my Must See Fifty)

Really good, great vocals too.

The Tattoo of the week won early. A girl with both David Bowie (as the character in Labyrinthe) and I believe Scarlet O'Hara. Frankly I gave a damn. Notice that it is not only Perry who can do cool B&W shots.

It was a stellar day - sign of the week won on Day one also.

Best indie band in Mexico - about to take over the world - Chikita Violenta (MS7) - as I step out of Canada party to pop into Maggie Mae's Rooftop. Stunning band. Loved it.

Back to Canada - where the expression that you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince was never truer. Diamond Rings - a glam, electro popper - great makeup. But all flash and dull.

Next up PS I Love You, beset by technical problems , you could still see some magic about tis two piece band with the amazing man mountain geetar player (MS8)

Then KARKWA from quebec.

Next a great fun show, Buck 65, the rapper with various guest vocalists, here with Jenn Grant. Go check out his duet with her called Paper Plane - I defy you to not love it. Here are the photos of them singing it...

Buck 65 scratchin"

And, only after all that, is it eight in the evening on Wednesday and now the Official start of SXSW 2011. Tradition - must start first show at BDRiley's Irsish pub, capacity about 35. Here are Coolrunnings. And we are off.....

One of the finds of the week. A real show - one of my must sees.....Brett Amakker & The Rodeo, together with their own Burlesque dancer. Johnny Cash lives with a Devo twist.....

Dave, Simon (sleeping) and I.

Back on to Sixth Street to the venue next door Esther's Folies to see The Yearbook Committee - here are Neil and Al on Sixth.

Yearbook Committee

SXSW is coming alive - next CHAPPO another great band, another pre-pick...

Stage Presence

Toilet Of The Week also won early - Dirty Dog Bar...

Pretentious? Moi? Sun Airways fail to live up to their Must See Status.

Great double bill to finish the night at Red 7 Patio. First The Cave Singers

Then The just brilliant Okkervil River........

John and I in the Okkervil River crowd.

Part of the gang, Jenn, Al, Moi, John and Dave.

A true High Hat.

And let there be sleep. Day one over......
